Section V = Mineral Products
Chapters: 25–27 · 147 HTS subheadings · Duty rates: See individual code pages
About This Section
Section V covers mineral products in three chapters: salt, sulfur, earths and stone (Chapter 25), metallic ores and slag (Chapter 26), and mineral fuels including petroleum and natural gas (Chapter 27). This section is dominated by energy commodities — crude petroleum alone accounts for the largest share of US imports by value. Duty rates are generally low (many mineral products enter duty-free), but energy imports are subject to strategic stockpile requirements, EPA environmental regulations, and DOE energy reporting. The Section 232 national security provisions do not apply to mineral fuels, but trade sanctions on specific countries (e.g., Russian crude oil) may restrict imports from certain origins.
This section contains 147 six-digit HTS subheadings across Chapters 25, 26, 27. Click any subheading below to view complete tariff rates, FTA preferences, and detailed import guidance.

Chapter Overview
Section V — Mineral Products covers Chapters 25, 26, 27 of the Harmonized Tariff Schedule. The HTS is organized into 21 sections and 97 chapters, with each chapter covering a distinct category of goods. Within this section, there are 147 six-digit subheadings, each potentially containing multiple 8-digit and 10-digit statistical suffixes that specify the exact duty rate applicable to your product.
Importers should pay particular attention to the Chapter Notes at the beginning of each chapter, as these notes define the scope of the chapter and may exclude certain products or provide special classification rules that override the General Rules of Interpretation (GRI).
